It seems that councils dont have the manpower/money to grit pavements these days(the cost to the NHS must be incredible but that's another topic),but the danger of falling can be greatly reduced by wearing socks over your shoes.Fishermans socks are best because the are large, hardwearing, and long enough to go up to thr knee and so keep trousers out of the slush.Stay safe and warm.Mick.

I've seen some boots which have crampons that let down from the sole when it is icy. I didn't buy them.

Hi there, The socks over your shoes really works, My sister goes to work with socks over her shoes every morning, luckily its dark so no one see her wearing them until she get to the bus stop and she says she wouldn't be without them, a good idea....... Alison xxx

Hi,
Saw on our local news yesterday about a local company who makes foot chains which fit over your shoes. Apparantly the Royal Mail have been buying them for their postmen. They come in a small pouch and would be great to help keep you upright. I don't know how much they cost but it should'nt be too expensive. Might consider getting some for myself.

I believe the socks over shoes thing does work..but how do you get your socks over your shoes with RA hands and fingers? I'm hoping to get out today..need to see the outside world even if just go for a few minutes drive in the car! Stephen is home so I think I'll manage to get to the car by holding on to him! Diane x

Has to be larger sizes Diane - that works well! I used my hubby's walking socks for going up the garden to see the chickens the other day! (He hasnt realised they are my new fashion accessory yet... but when wearing them i envisage myself as Sarah Jessica Parker - setting the stakes high for mid winter catwalks everywhere....) Doreen - WHY didnt u buy those boots? We will all need some for our nights out if this weather continues much longer..)

It's that time of year again...getting colder and there may be a harsh icy winter ahead. That's what the meteorologists keep saying anyway. I bought these amazing rubber strap contraptions that slip over your ordinary shoes. They have metal spikes on a metal pad which fits onto the sole of your feet and a strap which stretches round the back of your heel. I live at the top of a very steep hill which is never gritted and was able to walk down it without fear of slipping last year. I would definitely recommend this product, for everyone...not just people with RA. Naomi X

I bought mine in Sweden. I've seen similar ones in hardware shops and also in those little catalogues of everything that you get posted through the door.
